The Feral Choir

The Feral Choir is based at Castle Douglas, in the heart of Galloway, South West Scotland. We are a choir which actively encourages membership from a broad community.

We use teaching methods that make music accessible to anyone, regardless of musical background. Entrance to the choir is without audition.

We understand that people are busy at different times of the year and it’s possible to be a member of the choir and drop in and out term by term.

If you'd like to come along and join us, look out for one of our taster workshops which we hold every year. The songs taught will be straightforward and there's no need to read music - everything will be taught by ear. You can come along to the whole series or just to one session. It's a great way to meet us and to see if you enjoy singing with us. Alternatively, you can just come along at the beginning of a term or series of sessions.

"I've always loved the sound of natural, untrained singing voices and it's a sound that's perfect for songs from Britain's folk repertoire. Of course singing in a choir demands discipline, but the style of these songs is unashamedly unlike that of classical music. Untamed song - yes - but we work hard to get it sounding like that".

Performing

Our repertoire is made up of songs from all over Britain, as well as lots of newly written songs that reflect and re-invent traditional music.

"Loved your concert. What a fantastic sound! It was fabulous to be so exquisitely entertained".
Audience member 2006

We work hard to produce innovative performances based on original research and material. You'll frequently find us performing new work which explores the identity and culture of Dumfries and Galloway in some way. We are often joined by traditional singers, musicians and readers who bring a fresh sound to each performance.

"The freshness and variety of the material Ali brings makes rehearsing and performing with the Feral Choir exciting and very rewarding".
